Saving A Child

Together they are the Bad Wolf. They can see anything and everything all at once. They can see Rose realising that the Doctor needs Jack more than her, they can see her realising that the Doctor refuses to see that fact and they can also see Rose and Jack banding together with the goal of making the Doctor accept that he needs somebody and that Jack is more than capable of being said somebody. They can see him lying dead on the floor and they hurt over the loss. There's nothing they can do.

Suddenly they notice a flutter, a new mind. Only it's dwindling and oh so small. That's when they realise that there's still live in Jack Harkness. A new life. A life with Gallifreyan blood running through its veins. A life that will be lost again since it can't survive without its mother's life force just yet. They know what to do, even if most Time Lords would frown upon their action, if they were still alive. They decide to bring him back, with just enough life to sustain him until the new life can live on its own. Only they can't burden it with never knowing its mother, can they? They give him enough life to get to know his child and the child knowing him until suddenly there's too much life. They've given him too much, they fixed him in time. They try to stop it, but it's too late. The deed is done. The mortal human being that they know as Jack Harkness has become immortal - doomed to an eternal life. At least now the Doctor won't have to watch Jack grow old and die, they think, trying to remind themselves of the positive things.

With horror they start splitting again and the TARDIS realises that Rose can't survive with her. Before she can think of something to undo what has started, the Doctor steps forwards and saves the day. After that things passed quickly. The Doctor prepares to leave, unwilling to stay for long in the place that nearly became his deathbed. The TARDIS can feel Jack coming, shows him on the screen so the Doctor will know to wait.

With dismay she realises that the Doctor ignores it, ignores Jack stumbling towards the TARDIS and simply leaves. She knows that the child whose life she risked so much for will be growing up with just one parent after all and mourns the lost opportunity. She hopes that one day they will find that child again and hopes that it won't be too late to teach them the things they need to know about their heritage without going insane with all the things they'll be able to see in their head. She hopes that of all the endless possibilities this child won't encounter anything dangerous to their health with nobody around who would actually know how to treat her.

After all, what else could she do, but try to make her Doctor happy by chances and opportunities that present themselves in the people they meet and the situations they encounter? She had no influence on anything else.

The End

Oh I like it a lot. Telling it from the TARDIS's POV is genius, and Jack and the Doctor having a baby is love.

Thanks :D

I've always been playing with the idea that Jack was pregnant on the Gamestation... and suddenly the TARDIS is in my head, whispering about it

BTW - I love your icon.

*sobs* Oh, Jack.
Also? This needs sequels. Lots of them.

The Doctor meeting his daughter has always been on my mind... although she usually doesn't like him because he abandoned Jack.

The real question is when I'm going to set the reunion, although I've got an idea about that now. Just need time to write.

she usually doesn't like him because he abandoned Jack.

Should think so too - her poor mum deserves better than that (And dear god, if ever I wrote such a sentence about Jack Harkness, I'd always assumed it'd be the other way round...)

I suppose everyone has to write a 'why the hell Jack said he was pregnant once' fic, right? I may write my own one day.

I think I might have written one without that sentence... but it certainly helped to motivate the ideas to come plentiful :D

And of course Time Lords age really slowly, right? So she'd still be around during the Torchwood canon we've got. I can't wait to see how you handle this [Translation: fic now y/y?]

...goddamn I want to write one now.

I mostly kept thinking about being the same as Jack... but after Jenny, I realised that they might always be wondering just where she gets the long life from :D

As for a sequel... I want to do it a bit fluffy so I'm considering to have the TARDIS find her again while Rose and the Doctor work towards getting Torchwood founded... but I'm itching to write a fic with her meeting the Doctor and yelling at him in current Torchwood time/canon.

Ideas are always so insisting on being written... :)

I don't know, the immortality was never genetic, it's something that was done to him - like someone who'd had a leg amputated wouldn't have one-legged kids. But yes, please write the one where she yells at the doctor. It would be very funny.

If you need a beta or someone to bounce ideas off of, drop me a line. For the next month or so I'm going to have way too much time on my hands.

I considered the immortality because Jack was pregnant with her as he became immortal... who knows what effects that could have on an unborn child - although I guess it would be great to leave it at them wondering about the possibility of it.

Good point. You could play it either way, I suppose.
